Untitled
This nameless sculpture, standing 26 meters tall and weighing around 40,000 kilograms, was created by the Russian sculptor and architect Naum Gabo in 1957. It is located on Coolsingel, next to the De Bijenkorf department stores.
Gabo took inspiration from the structure of trees and plants for the shape of the artwork, but he chose not to give it a name to keep its meaning open. That’s why it remains unnamed.
This artwork is one of the pioneers in merging modern sculpture into the culture of the 20th century.
Gabo stated that it represents the strength and vitality of the Dutch people. Among the city’s residents, it quickly became known as “the tree,” “the flower,” and, most commonly, “the thing.”
