Rotterdam may be the city in the Netherlands with the most outdoor art on display.
For years, Rotterdam has been engaged on a project called the Rotterdam International Sculpture Collection, which can be found in various places throughout the city.
The city has a significant number of large sculptures. Maybe it’s because there was a lot of empty space after the war, providing room for big creations.
On Westersingel, you can find the Sculpture Route. Westersingel is a canal near Central Station, where you can see several works by famous artists like Rodin, Carel Visser, Joel Shapiro, Picasso, and Umberto Mastroianni along its nearly one-kilometer-long bank.
Rotterdam proudly has the oldest bronze statue in the country. It’s the statue of Erasmus, located in Grotekerkplein next to the Sint Laurenskerk, dating back to 1622.
There are also modern sculptures like the controversial Santa Claus by Paul McCartney or Cascade by Atelier van Lieshout.
The Rotterdam International Sculpture Collection consists of about 65 sculptures, and it’s managed by SIR: Sculpture International Rotterdam.
