Rijnhavenbrug
The Rijnhavenbrug in Rotterdam connects Katendrecht with the Wilhelmina quay. The new pedestrian and bicycle bridge, which spans 160 meters across the Rijnhaven, was designed by Quist Wintermans Architects on behalf of the Rotterdam municipality.
Its slim shape and color draw inspiration from the cranes of the old port. The wooden railings are wide, and the stainless-steel mesh provides visibility and safety. The bridge has a movable section that is 27 meters wide. Its widest part measures 11 meters. On this section, there are urban furnishings and lanterns on the steel deck.
On February 16, 2011, the first pile was driven for the bridge, which was constructed in 15 months in Middelburg by the construction company Hillebrand. From Middelburg, the bridge was transported in three parts by water using pontoons. In Rotterdam, two floating cranes placed the bridge sections on the pillars and the quay. Several weeks of assembly followed.
On February 8, 2012, the Rijnhaven bridge was officially opened.
With this new connection, both Katendrecht and Wilhelminapier have become more attractive. Travel time for cyclists from Katendrecht to the city center has decreased, and businesses and restaurants benefit from improved accessibility. The bridge is also a nice alternative route for visitors of the SS Rotterdam.
The Rijnhavenbrug is commonly known as Hoerenloper (prostitute) due to the former red-light district which was previously in this area of Katendrecht.
