Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam
The Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam is in the Museumpark, housed in a former mansion from 1852 called Villa Dijkzigt, which was expanded in 1995 with a modern glass pavilion.
What started as a small collection in an attic of a local school has evolved, with the support of the municipality of Rotterdam, into a museum.
Visitors can explore exhibitions, activities, information, and collections related to animal nature and the natural environment. The collections include taxidermy birds and mammals, butterflies, insects, skeletons, shells, and fossils.
Two of the most impressive pieces are the 15-meter-long skeleton of a sperm whale and the skeleton of an elephant.
The museum also hosts exhibitions on urban nature and natural history.
There is a shop where visitors can purchase books, fossils, seeds, and other nature-related items. The museum also organizes conferences, weddings, and interactive birthday parties for children.
The museum receives over 40,000 visitors per year and has been known as the Museum of Natural History Rotterdam since 2006.
The Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
