Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen
The Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is the oldest and most renowned museum in Rotterdam.
The museum first opened its doors in 1849 in the Schielandshuis, thanks to the contribution of Frans Jacob Boijmans, a lawyer who donated his art collection to the city. After a fire in 1864, which resulted in the loss of a significant part of the collection, a new museum was constructed in the Museumpark. The new museum was inaugurated in 1935.
In 1958, the collection of entrepreneur Van Beuningen was added, and the museum acquired the name Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
The museum focuses on four areas: classical masters, prints and drawings, decorative art, and modern art.
Among its permanent exhibitions, one can admire works by renowned artists such as Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Wassily Kandinsky, Vincent van Gogh, Maurizio Cattelan, René Magritte, and Dalí.
The collection also includes one of the world’s richest collections of works on paper (prints, drawings, lithographs) from the Middle Ages to the present day.
The museum also houses a vast collection of large-scale domestic objects from previous centuries. This collection ranges from medieval pitchers and Golden Age glassware to furniture by many famous designers.
The Museum’s Education Department organizes children’s activities, courses, lectures, and guided tours.
Next to the museum, the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen has been constructed, which serves as an enormous storage space for artworks.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
