Hoek van Holland
Hoek van Holland is a small coastal town in the Netherlands with around 10,000 residents.
It is located on the northern shore of the Nieuwe Waterweg, about 25 kilometers from Rotterdam.
It’s port serves as the departure point for the daily ferry between the Netherlands and the English city of Harwich. It is also a popular tourist destination.
There are some beautiful natural areas nearby, such as Hoekse Bosjes and Staelduinse Bos.
There are also museums, many of them related to marine life. Among these are:
-Kustverlichtings, (museum about coastal lighting).
-Atlantikwall Museum (museum with weapons, machines and possessions of the German soldiers who lived here during the Second World War)
– Fort 1881 (coastal defence museum),
-Zeetoren (built in 1941 by the German occupation forces, it was part of the Germans’ defensive line; Atlantikwall.) Today there are numerous leisure activities such as Escape Rooms, Segway rides, or workshops for children.
-Museum Rockart (with collections of Dutch pop art from the 50’s and 60’s).
-Keringshuis (impressive storm surge barrier, the masterpiece of the delta system). At the Keringshuis you will learn why the Dutch are experts at controlling water and preventing flooding in the country.
Hoek van Holland is the people’s beach of Rotterdam. The beach is more than 3.5 kilometres long and 250 metres wide and has several beach bars.
The beach is ideal for various water sports, such as surfing, kite surfing, paddle boarding, or sailing. There are several water sports clubs and surf schools.
How to get to Hoek van Holland from Rotterdam
The town is easily accessible by car (via the A20 motorway), or public transport.
From Rotterdam Central Station you can take the underground to Beurs, and there take the underground B to Hoek van Holland. The journey takes about 35 minutes, and the last metro stop is only a few meters from the beach.
