Fikkie

Fikkie is a small bronze dog located on Oude Binnenweg in Rotterdam, created by Hungarian artist Joekie Simak.

The statue was given as a gift to the city of Rotterdam in 1963 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Rotterdamsch Studenten Corps (RSC), the oldest student association in Rotterdam, situated in the Kralingen neighborhood.

Fikkie has been stolen or taken away three times but was returned to the police station each time.

During the “Rotterdam Clean” campaign, which aimed to promote the importance of maintaining a clean city, artist Hans Citroen placed a bronze piece resembling excrement in front of the dog. In 1999, the RSC adopted the sculpture with a commitment to clean and care for it annually.

The statue holds a special place in the hearts of the city’s residents. During the summer months, neighbors place a bowl of water next to the statue so that dogs passing by can have a drink.
