Everybody is dead but us
The artwork by artist Ben Zegers, titled “Everybody is dead but us,” consists of two tall aluminum feet, each measuring 7.5 meters in height. It is situated along the Binnerotte promenade in Rotterdam. Each foot weighs around 2,000 kilograms.
These feet mark the birthplace of the city and reference the site’s historical function as a weekly market.
At this same location, during the construction of the Willemsspoortunnel in 1991, remnants of the oldest lock on the Rotte River, dating back to the year 1270, were discovered. Rotterdam derived its name from this ancient river. Soon after, it was decided to commemorate this spot with an artistic installation.
According to Ben Zegers, the phrase “Everybody is dead but us” serves as a statement that connects the present, the past, and the future, constantly urging the city and its residents to collaborate and work together.
