Douane Museum
The Douane Museum opened in 1937 with Professor Van der Poel’s private collection. He was a tax official and director of the customs agency in South Holland.
Taxes and customs played a crucial role in Rotterdam’s development, leading to the establishment of this museum.
The museum exhibits objects from the past 15 centuries, showcasing the history of taxes and customs in the Netherlands.
The collection includes historical prints, paintings, photos, drawings, uniforms, games, fiscal stamps, vouchers, measuring instruments, and smuggled items. They also display contemporary art.
The museum organizes various activities, workshops, and games for children, highlighting the techniques used by smugglers over the centuries and explaining how tax revenues are used.
They also offer room rentals for special events or birthdays.
Children can enter the museum for free.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
