Apart from the large harbour at the river mouth, where big ships carrying minerals, grain, chemicals, and millions of containers pass through each year, there are several docks within the city center that are worth visiting.
These docks have witnessed many events over the years and still have stories to share.
Is Oudehaven really the oldest dock in Rotterdam, as they say?
The dock of Wijnhaven was used to be filled with warehouses for storing wine.
Delfshaven is the birthplace of the great naval hero Piet Heyn, who captured the entire silver fleet of the Spanish Armada. Additionally, it was from this port that the Pilgrim Fathers set sail to America.
Entrepothaven, now a marina with large leisure boats, was once used by the Nazis as a departure point for Jewish prisoners heading to German concentration camps.
Leuvehaven, currently a maritime museum, played a crucial role in Rotterdam’s growth as a port city and was destroyed during the German bombings in World War II.
Veerhaven was spared from German bombs, and on its dock, you can still experience the atmosphere of Rotterdam before the war, with its many grand houses.
Parkhaven connects the Delfshavense Schie river to the Nieuwe Maas through its drawbridges, and there are recreational boats moored there.
Rijnhaven, which served as a port for storing cargo transported down the river, has an ambitious project for the coming years. The adjacent area is currently being rebuilt, creating a new city center.
