Chabot Museum
Since 1993, the Chabot Museum has been located at the entrance of Museumpark, in a small house built in 1938. This building represents the architectural style known as Nieuwe Bouwen (New Construction).
The Nieuwe Bouwen style emerged in the 1920s as a movement in Germany, the Netherlands, and France. Its focus was on functionality and simplicity, without excessive ornamentation.
The museum houses an impressive collection of works by the Dutch expressionist artist Henk Chabot.
Chabot is considered one of the significant figures in Dutch expressionism.
Born in Rotterdam, Chabot spent most of his life in the city. His paintings depict scenes of peasants, gardeners, landscapes, and the war events he witnessed. Unfortunately, some of his works were destroyed during the bombings of World War II.
His first museum opened in 1962 in Rotterdam’s Hillegersberg neighborhood, where he resided and worked for many years. Eventually, in 1993, his entire collection was relocated to Museumpark.
Chabot’s artworks, including paintings, drawings, and sculptures, can be categorized into four themes: portraits, landscapes, figures, and animals.
The Chabot Museum also offers guided tours to the Van Nelle Factory, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This building symbolizes Dutch modernism. These tours are available on the weekends.
The museum is open from Tuesday to Friday, 11:00 to 16:30, and on weekends from 11:00 to 17:00.
