At the doctor in Dutch

How To Talk To A Doctor In The Netherlands

If you’re living in or visiting the Netherlands, knowing some basic Dutch phrases for the doctor’s office can be incredibly helpful. Whether you’re in a big city or a smaller town, being able to describe your symptoms clearly will make your visit much easier.

In the Randstad region (the area between Utrecht, Amsterdam, The Hague, and Rotterdam), most people speak English quite well. However, if you move to other parts of the country, you may need to use some simple Dutch medical phrases to communicate effectively.

The pronunciations provided below are written in a way that’s easy for English speakers to follow.

We’re not aiming to teach you Dutch grammar or full fluency — for that, it’s best to take lessons with a professional teacher. You can check out our Language Learning section for tips and resources on studying Dutch.
